Thanks for Supporting the 5-Cents a Meal Offering
by Barbara Sayles, CFP Hunger Action Advocate
YOUR generous offerings in 2023 are supporting our own CFP congregations with hunger programs in their local communities as well as our four PATH Partners.
This year the PATH committee awarded small grants to two CFP churches: 1) St. Lukes, Titusville used their grant to purchase food supplies for their Meals For Moms program, which provides a complete meal for families once a month and their food pantry that is open to thee public twice a week. Thanks to this grant, St. Lukes is now listed with Titusville Community Services as an Emergency Food Bank. 2) First, Eustis used their small grant to support their hot meals program. Every Friday they serve 200-275 hot meals and this grant has helped with the price gap due to the rise in the cost of groceries. What a blessing it is to be able to support our churches who are the hands and feet of Christ in their communities. These small grants have become so popular among our congregations that the PATH committee has received a record seven applications for 2024, this is not only an indication of the continued need in our communities, but also a reflection of the amazing work in which our CFP congregations are engaged!
Your 4 PATH partners continue to utilize their PATH apportionments to relieve the burden of hunger statewide and internationally. 1) With PATH support In 2023, AIR Guatemala has provided training for planting vegetable gardens and fruit trees in 73 communities and planted 775,502 trees to continue to reforest Guatemala so that local farmers can grow crops without fear of landslides on deforested hillsides. 2) PC(USA) Mission co-workers Dan and Elizabeth Turk continue their work in Madagascar, PATH support enables them to continue to plant tree nurseries and vegetable gardens at Seminaries across Madagascar, and provide training for Seminary students so they will be skilled in gardening and tree planting as well which will help them forward that training to members of their future congregations. 3) Second Harvest utilizes their PATH support to provide nutritious meals and groceries to individuals and families across 7 Counties in Central Florida. In 2023 your support helped them provide an average of 300,000 meals per day! 4) Society of St. Andrew (SoSA) utilizes their PATH support to provide nutritious fruits and vegetables to food banks, pantries and food distributions statewide. SoSA also involves many of our CFP churches in gleaning events and local food distributions. In October SoSA provided over 22,000lbs of nutritious food for distribution to the local community in coordination with First Presbyterian, Deland; and in November Ken Sparks and PYC Volunteers from numerous churches gleaned about 3,000 lbs of sweet corn for His Compassion food bank. YTD in 2023 your support has enabled SoSA to distribute over 3.5 million pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables to families and individuals in need statewide.
Thank you for giving to 5c Per Meal. As you can see, 5c collectively accomplishes incredible things across the globe. If your church would like a personal presentation to boost your offering, contact Barbara Sayles at bsayles@cfpresbytery.org and she will be happy to schedule a personal visit and presentation with your congregation.
